THROUGH THE LENS: Covent Garden at Christmas
Is there a more festive place in London than Covent Garden? Every year the market gets a beautiful makeover in time for Christmas, with plenty of giant mistletoe bunches to kiss under!
Did you know?:
– Covent Garden has been an area of trade since the C7th when it was at the heart of the Anglo-Saxon trading town of Lundenwic;
– In 1200, the area was walled off as part of Westminster Abbey, and known as “the gardens of the Abbey and Convent”, later giving to the name Covent Garden;
– It was in 1654 that Covent Garden officially became a market, selling fruit and vegetables (although the C18th saw it become a famous Red Light district!)
